EMU Reorganization & Next Steps

Post by Malant » Wed Oct 11, 2017 9:44 am

Hail!

If you are reading this, you probably have a lot of questions about what went on over the last few days. We went from a preview, to a launch, to a re-launch, a full shutdown, and now a complete change on the team “running the show”. While Doon and I may seem like an odd choice to take over the project, we ask that you hear us out and reserve judgement for a few weeks while we do our best to deliver you an iteration of SBE that you can be excited about.

Over the past few years the SBE team has done a lot to expand on top of classic Shadowbane, the game we all can't seem to quit. Although much of the new content was well received, no amount of balance changes and new systems can make up for basic performance issues and server stability. While design and development resources are often independent of each other, there were always a lot of questions about how these resources were prioritized.

As Starfish mentioned, we're taking steps to ensure we continue to differentiate ourselves from the previous iterations of this emulation and the issues it has suffered. In that spirit, I would like to introduce myself as the new Project Manager for SBE. My main focus will be to implement prioritization and change control systems to ensure we are focusing on what matters to the community as a whole.

Top priorities? Stability, server performance and bug fixes. We will continue to evaluate and introduce end game content in the form of both balance changes and new content such as FC events, however we will not implement these changes into the production until we are happy with server performance, and have properly put anything else through our new QA process.

Our goal over the next week is to scope out what needs to be done for us to release a server that is stable, performs well, and leverages the new launcher including single boxing functionality. We will be leaving the current server up for the time being with the current single boxing system enabled, please keep in mind we will be putting zero developer work into this system. We’ll absolutely add in new content on our next launch as time allows, but the priority will be to make sure we have a baseline that we can expand on as the design team develops and refines new stuff.

Up next will be a post from Doon talking about some of the changes we want to make around community interaction and QA. Don’t be shy with feedback and/or criticism, regardless of if you are a new player, a SBE vet, or a MB troll.

HAIL!

As John said, I may seem like an odd choice to take on a leadership role in this project. To be very clear, I am taking this seriously and my goal is to help this project get to a place where we can all enjoy ourselves. The specific things I'm here to focus on are community engagement, transparency, and quality assurance. Getting right to it, here is what we've decided so far about the path forward:

Current Server
We are going to leave this online for the time being. We encourage you to report bugs you find and we'll be in game periodically handing out cool stuff.

Wipe & Relaunch
Right now we do not plan on having a new server launch on the October 20th as previously discussed.
It is too soon to guess when the next launch will be, but it will not happen until we are happy with the performance & stability of both the server and the launcher.

We will be sharing our progress and priorities as we scope out what needs to be done over the next week or two. Make no mistake, we're all itching to get back in game and as soon as we can give a reasonable estimate on the next launch we will do so.

<3Doon
I believed that you wouldn't let Doon scam us, because I believed you, not him....
I can't save face for believing in KoR and you to Infamous, so I'm just quitting SB. It is no wonder that he unites people to hate him over the way he acts....
